360 update

So to my surprise they updated the 360 Dashboard. For months since the new slim 360 Xbox came out, all the Xbox and game ads showed a different “splash screen” and this update changes the start up logo to that swirlling  swoosh ribbon.  And the look of the Dashboard has change to what can be best described as the most BLAND looking interface i’ve ever seen.  It reminds me of classic windows 2000 or “Basic” mode in Vista/Win7 far too much bright white.

There is no way to change the overall color scheme. We used to be able to change colors as presets, before XNE. Even some themes would change the colors for text and windows blades and other aspects of the UI, but not anymore. I’ve also noticed that the new interface blocks out the lower half of the background of my theme in most of the channels on the dashboard.  Noticeable when you’ll looking at your friend channel showing their avatars side by side.

What i find really annoying is the ability to rate a game in your Game Library is gone, you now can only rate games from the games marketplace. Which is fucking STUPID.  This means I have to HUNT for the game, that i already HAVE, in that clusterfuck of the game marketplace, which STILL has no search function so you’re foced to flip though each game listinf 5 at a time. JUST so you can give it a rating.  Sure i want to SEE what the overall rating is for a game is when I’m shopping. But I want to rate games I have already played. It was quick and easy to do it from the Games Library, but nooooooo.

Why would I want to rate a game I’ve not played?  Honestly they should only allow gamers to rate games they they had actually played. Perhaps enable ratings ONLY after the player gets their first achievement, thus guaranteeing they actually played some of it.  Otherwise this can skew the rankings if everyone can rate a game they never played, especially silver members which anyone can make endless “alt” gamertags that don’t have gold memberships, and really abuse the Ranking system.

Ya know they claimed the cleaned up the matketplace to make it easier to find what you want. But it’s still the same confusing mess of crap you have to thumb though 5 games at a time. Why is it when i download a game, or an app (not a game on DVD) it needs an update?  Shouldn’t the initial download ALREAY be updated?

All of the sounds the dashboard makes have changed.  Except the sound you get when friends come online and when you get achievements.  For which i wish those sounds were different.

A lot of the apps needed an update but not many.  Facebook and Twitter apps didn’t need an update but the app did, even though i don;t see anything diffrent with it at all.  Hell after nearly a year now using it’s STILL showing that same fucking car ad when i start

The good things I find with this update is the interface seems much more snappy even on my old slow, fat, overheating Xenon Xbox 360. Also while some of my friends don’t like all the white on the screen (and I find it bland) it IS a lot easier for me to read with my fucked up eye sight, but i still want to be able to change the color scheme.

Under “It’s about fucking time” category…

Microsoft has released an update to the Xbox 360 allowing gamers to use USB thumb drives as normal Memory Units to store gamer tags, game saves, DLC, XBL Arcade games, Installed games, etc. It’s not like we never could use USB storage devices before, but we weren’t able to SAVE anything on them. We could only use them to play media files on them that you put on your self with a PC, or from MP3 players with USB connectors. This function became rather useless once we have been able to file share and stream music and videos from our home networks to the 360.

I also get the feeling that Microsoft plans to stop selling Memory Units (MU) considering how damn expensive they are.  A measly 64mb MU is about $40, a 512mb (½ gig) MU is $60!  That’s a HUGE mark-up for flash memory considering that a 16gb USB Flash drive can be had for less than $20!

The only limitation is you need a USB flash drive at 1gb minimum, which is fine since not even the largest MU’s go beyond a half-gig (512mb) anyway.  Also you can only use up to 16gb which ironically gives you more space than Microsoft’s 20gb HDDs once they are formatted (14.5gb on a USB drive, vs. 13.9gb on an Xbox 20gb HDD)

This update will allow Xbox Arcade/Core gamers who don’t have hard drives to use their 360 to the fullest, since a 16gb USB drive are cheap (and you can use more than one), and allows you to download games, and use the “install” function for games on disc so they load faster.

Also there’s this rumored “Xbox 360 Slim” that may be out soon, which my no longer have MU slots. I’ve also been able to resurrect my old 20gb HDD, using the transfer cable i got from my 120gb HDD, and I’m using it again as a normal Xbox 360 storage device, so I now have a total of 156.5GB of storage space among all my devices.  I first had to dock the 20gb drive back on the 360’s drive bay to format it properly, after that i just hooked it to the rear USB port with the transfer cable, and it’s kosher.

Loved Mass Effect 2

Love it, just finished the main story, but here are my comments, suggestions, other gripes.

FYI: No Spoilers!  so it’s safe to read if you hadn’t played it.

For a game that requires TWO game discs, the game seems awfully short. I did all the loyalty missions, and a lot of other side missions. Though i did play for 3 days strait, with 28 hours total under my belt (plus i re-did about 5 loyalty missions, and played the ending twice). I didn’t really go ape-shit with boring mineral mining/scanning at all the planets I found.  Still it seemed rather short when most games of this magnitude take me at least a week to get though. Brutal Legend took me longer.  There must be more missions if I go out and scan every planet (I did buy more star charts at Illium.)

Leveling seems a bit slow.  Seems like I have to play the game twice to reach level 30 (for that achievement). There doesn’t seem to be enough content, or any “grinding” to do to level up (I don’t think mining gives XP does it?). Plus my imported gave save from ME1 only started me off at level 2?  Come on… 2?

I use a sniper rifle a lot, and when taking cover, it keeps zooming when I use a biotic power. Doesn’t matter if I use the power wheel, or a mapped button on my controller, it zooms every time I have my sniper rifle quipped while taking cover. It also zooms when I blind fire my sniper rifle (ie Fire w/o pulling left trigger to zoom) while taking cover.  It should ONLY ZOOM when I’m pulling on left trigger! Annoying!

While on the subject of zooming; the Sniper Rifle almost never zooms in on the direction I’m already looking at.  I know it’s following a target that’s framed in the red brackets, but  that should only apply to biotic powers, and giving orders. Not weapon zooming since most of the time those targets are taking cover behind a wall, so I am off to the side waiting for them to pop their head out for a head shot.  So often when I zoom I end up eyeballing some wall or the side of a crate, not aimed at what I was expecting to see, and I get disoriented.. and then I become an open target.  Not fun.

Can someone PLEASE update Miranda and Jacob’s AI so they don’t run into my fucking line of fire, and then BITCH at me for shooting them? (Shepard cockslaps Miranda)

Why can’t I re-map what the Y button does?  If I can re-map which biotic powers the left and right bumpers do, why not the yellow Y button? I rarely ever used that biotic power (invisibility) be better off using it for something else.

When scanning planets for minerals, it would nice if the scanner marked where I had already scanned, so we can be thorough with scans, and not double scan over the same spots.

The “scars” on my characters face look stupid.  I thought there was some sort of corruption when importing my Mass Effect 1 save game. I know it’s to show how much of a “renegade” I am.  My character is a flaming redhead, and it looks more like facial hair, or fresh scratch that is still bleeding.  A “scar” is wound that has healed up; not looking bloody/fleshy red and torn, like a STD.  Zaeed has some REAL scars. And why waste 50,000 on platinum for something that’s removes this. when it’s stupid to have in the game in the first place?

Speaking of 50,000 platinum, what’s the point of the element “full bars” showing how much you have, when you’re scanning planets?  It seems to top off when you get 25,000, so you get the impression you can’t have 50,000 of platinum in order to get the medical bay upgrade. There is no cargo hold upgrade in the game, as if you need one. However you can keep getting more and more; your cargo holds are apparently infinite.  I had over 100,000 on one of the elements.. so what’s the point of them being “full” at 25,000 when you can keep acquiring more?

That direction indicator you see when pressing down on the thumb sticks is often confusing.  It will point in one direction, then you move barely an inch and it’s pointing in some completely opposite direction.

Why is it that my character changes her weapon to what I wasn’t holding in cutsceens? What’s worse, in some cutsceenes (especially towards the end of the game) she using an assault rifle, that I never quip at the start of the mission. Plus add to the fact MY CLASS DOESN’T ALLOW ASSAULT RIFLES! Nor did I pick assault rifle training when i was able to add another weapon skill (I chose shotgun).  Yet she some how pulls one out of her ass all of a sudden?

Joker is a fucking riot (Seth Green rules) “Oh shit!”  “Shit. shit, shit!” “What the Shit!” (At EDI) “Yeah, Thanks, Mom.”   Best Level Ever!

Wasn’t Joker a paraplegic in the first game? He’s walking (gimping) in this one. I thought they would have explained something about that…. Maybe I accidentally skipped that cutscene or something… or I’m just remembering ME1 wrong.

Lots of “shit” in Mass Effect 2, but why no F-Bombs in this game? Well better chance at seeing Miranda’s tits; you just know they did a full nude body scan of Yvonne Strahovski for this game. :p  (Update OOPS Jack drops a lot of F-Bombs!  my bad! Hours of playing makes you forget details!)

I collected ALL the ship models for my cabin, but there is no way to get a good closer look at them, and letting me know what they are. I have no idea what most of these ships are!

The choices for dialogue is misleading as to your Paragon and Renegade points. Many times I ask myself “what the hell did I say to get +2 Renegade?” when the responses I chose (and what Shepard says) seemed completely benign to me. I’ll see a pop-up showing +2 Renegade, just to see a +2 for Paragon right after, just seems so contradiction, when the net result of my conversation should have been neutral, but the character will still act slighted from the “renegade” response.  Not all of the Renegade dialogue choices seem all that bad, most of them I don’t come off as a bitch at all.

As for the Dialogue, why does the same old options appear over and over? Like after you finished the main story, you’ll still have conversions about “we will defeat the Reapers” even though you already had!  Any time you click on EDI’s console Shepard becomes retarded and asks, “What’s this room for?” for the umpteenth time. So how can I possibly pursue a relationship with anyone when all the dialog options are the same, even when I finished the main story?

I just can’t get laid.  I couldn’t get my sex on in the 1st Mass Effect, and I wasn’t able to score in ME2 this time.  What the shit?  Is it because I’m using a female commander Shepard, and I have to talk with male characters? I can’t get no hot lesbo action with Kelly or Miranda?

Kelly said she’d feed my fish, but I found then DEAD!  That lying bitch… and she never put out for me!

Update: There won’t be a dashboard system update to our 360’s after this XBL down time, but it is a preparation for it, but our Xbox’s will not be updated till later this fall.

Today Xbox Live is offline for entire day, while they update everything, and soon our Xbox 360’s will be updated with the new system dashboard update that might turn our beloved Xbox 360’s into Wii’s.  This is your last day to enjoy how your 360 runs and operates.

Another shitty thing is watching any videos or movies you may have that are encoded with mpeg4. The codec that was introduced almost a year ago requires you to be online Xbox live for the codec to acctually work. Lame.

Things we can look forward too but will probably never use:

  1. Avatars.  This is still a gimic, and most games play already have thier own main character.  My Rock Band chick is hawt. If I wanted avatars I’d play Second Life.  Oh wait….
  2. Netflix. Something else I’ll never use.  They talked about how you can “share” a movie with your friends over xbox live, but everyone has to be a netflix subscriber to even watch a “shared” movie. So what’s the point then? What do you think Bit Torrent is for?
  3. New dashboard. Microsoft will also be “borrowing” from Apple giving you a page-flipping type interface replacing the “blades” we got so used to. Hopefully this will help in nagivating the HUGE massive library on Xbox Live, and marketplace. The biggest problem is acctually finding stuff you’re intrested in with the current interface.  So little room, big text that takes forever to scroll down so you can read the whole discription.
  4. I hope I don’t brick!  No doubt some people’s Xbox’s will brick for no reason after the update. So don’t mod your Xbox! Thank gawd I bought a service contract for my 360 which has been a gawd-send since my units have RRoD’ed three times, plus an optical disc failure too.

Microsoft Compensation!

I called up Xbox support, and after listening to the Halo theme music for the umpteenth time while on hold, I was able to speak to a supervisor. Because I’ve dealt with FOUR units that need to be repaired, I will be given special priorty to a “Elete support team” (as said by the supervisor) who are set up for dealing with special cases like myself who have had too many system failures.

Xbox support was apparetly so swamped with support calls that this “elete” team wasn’t able to get to me before the end of their work day, so they are going to call me back tommarow afternoon and speak with me. I’m a little confused as to why they need to call me. I just want to get the box asap so I can send off my broken unit and get it back before I leave town.

The supervisor eluded to compensation from having to deal with four 360s dying on me. That made me raise an eyebrow. Compensation… like what? Last time they gave me 13 extra months to my membership, I don’t really need 2 years. I’d rather have a buttload of MS points. But what I’d REALLY want is to get a NEW (not a referb) Xbox 360, and the newer versions with a HDMI port.

So perhaps this team is “elite” since they have the power to grant people anything. Free MS points, games, shwag… who knows? Otherwise why would they need to speak to me in the first place when I just want to get my Xbox replaced asap? Hopefully I can also have them “overnight” the shipping both ways so maybe I’ll have my FIFTH Xbox back before the end of this week? That would rock!

Five is my favorite number (and multiples of 5), so I hope it’s also the charm for me! I sure am going to get my fair share of the 3 billion dollars that Microsoft reported to be loosing to the failure rate of the Xbox 360.

Lets recap:
July 2006 – Bought my first Xbox 360, Premium version. Bought a service contract for $50.  The best $50 I ever spent!

September 2006 – Days before the inital 90 day warranty was over, I got the Three Red Lights of Death (TRLoD). This was just around the time they announced an extended warranry to the very first units of the Xbox 360, but mine was too new to be included. But I already had a service contract so it was a free replacement, and I got a premium version. Service contract extended a few months.

March 2007 – I just got a new HDTV to play games on my 360. The moment I hook up my 360 to my new TV, and set it to 1080p; it choaks and I get TRLoD! With my service contract it gets replaced, but I end up with a CORE version? Minor cosmetic thing anyway, since I kept the HDD unit I had since I had my first 360 back in July ’06.

October 2007 – Just weeks before anticipating Guitar Hero III release. I get the three red rings of DEATH again. After two weeks later I get a replacement before GH3 hits the shelves. This unit was also a CORE version but with the loudest optical drive I’ve ever heard! And 13 months added to my XBL gold membership for free!

December 2007 – The day of the new dashboard update (Dec 4th). That noisy optical disc drive proved to be a ticking time bomb. I had some minor problems with the optical disc drive other than it being really noisy, like when I eject the disc, it would still be spinning. When playing CoD4, I heard this horrible loud noise akin to a coffee grinder. I thought it was going to scratch up the game disc, but it’s fine. But now the disc tray will constantly eject when closing (with a disc in it or not).

So now this time it’s not the TRLoD, so I’m stuck with a half-assed Xbox 360 that still works, but the optical drive is shot. I can still play downloaded games, and watch movies, since they added Mpeg4 support.
