With blood and sweat, and duct tape!

Filed under: Second Life Shit! — hugsalot @ 5:52 pm

That’s what’s holding the Second Life service up right now.  I’m starting to think that the concept of updating the service with OUT taking down the entire service offline just isn’t working.  All this week they have been trying to update the server side of everything (namely asset database servers, where all your stuff lives) and they keep running into problems.

You can read a nice play-by-play in the Linden Blog. The people who comment on  it sound like broken records.  Always someone bitching about how he hasn’t been able to login for 4 hours.  Another complaining about lag as if it didn’t exist before the beginning of the internet time. Pages of user complaining about crashing or getting kicked offline when they teleport, which I got numerous times my self.

The funny thing is the Lindens don’t read those comments.  Hell I don’t read all of those long winded comments, and they expect the Lindens to read each one, and do something about it?  It’s not even an official venue to contact the Lindens about problems of any kind.

Another odd thing I’m finding posted in the comments are links to other blogs, and I’m not sure exactly how these are getting posted on there.  The more amusing one is “Second Life Sucks” and they started a weekly wrap-up of a choice collection of user comments from the Linden Blog of user complaints.

Petition to keep Windows XP alive

Filed under: Uncategorized — hugsalot @ 1:24 am

This is a petition from Infoworld to convince Microsoft to not drop support of Windows XP at the end of June this year, and not force everyone to use Windows Vista.  Not many people like Vista, and more so don’t need Vista because it’s so incompatible with so much existing hardware and applications that people use everyday, which could distrupt thier work flow if forced to install Vista, and deal with it’s problems. Don’t fix what’s not broke (besides Vista).

Is this really Microsoft’s fault, or is this a fault of the hardware industry and software developers who had years to develop compatible software and proper drivers since the Longhorn beta?

And don’t gloat you Mac users.  Apple is a lot more less forgiving every time a new OS comes out, or when new hardware is released that out classes previous generations.  But you’re all brainwashed to buy a new mac every six months anyway.

Regardless, no one needs nor wants to be forced to buy Windows Vista. And we need to keep the only usable and relativity’s stable Windows OS around.

Good job Lindens

Filed under: Second Life Shit! — hugsalot @ 3:12 pm

I didn’t think the Lindens were even qualified to Win an Emmy award, I though that applied to television shows?  …who knew but congrats anyway.  God knows what they won an Emmy for.  I read the article but it still made no sense.. not that I give a flying shit anyway.

This is on the heels of a big data base upgrade where they are expanding the number of servers, which should hopefully alleviate the gridlock on database queries. In theory. Right now it’s still a sloppy mess.  But this is normal when the service returns online from a prolonged downtime when 40,000 users (mostly alts and bots) try to login at the same time and they all hit the database server at the same time as thier clothing and attachments download to them

Three hours later, and there has been no progress.  I still look like a gray ruthed doll with no attachments, nor hair.  I can’t even change body shapes or clothes or it says “Can’t change  appearance until clothing and shape are loaded.”  So that means I’m stuck like this until; who knows when.   Even in my environment around me is partly loaded with gray textures.  I can’t teleport anywhere since it just gives up since it’s not able to complete my teleport request in a “timely fashion” as if everything else is done in a timely fashion?  Hell I’d rather have it done in a SLOW fashion, than not at all.
