One minor complaint…

Filed under: Uncategorized — hugsalot @ 1:41 am

..that I have with GH3

I have a widescreen TV (1080p bitches!) but why doesn’t GH3 use the extra screen space when playing battle/co-op?  The two fret boards are barely overlapping, and you’d think they could put in some extra code saying that if your video setting is “widescreen” then use a different layout for the fret boards, and screen indicators.  Spread the fret boards apart more or use bigger ones.

I also wish my wireless guitar supported my rechargeable battery pack.

Guitar Hero III

Filed under: Uncategorized — hugsalot @ 6:57 am

Yeah, anyone who knows me knows I’m knee deep in GH3.

Though frankly I don’t feel the same amount of glee as I had with GH2. Perhaps it’s because I started playing it from scratch from never playing this game before at all, and I’m skipping the easy modes and intros (except ones that give achievements).

The new guitar ROCKS! For some reason I kept picturing it will be bulky, but it feels nearly the same as the old 360 Xplorer controller but more solidly built, even though you can take it apart. The box it came in is about the same size as the GH2 box. Which I thought was weird considering the guitar neck is detachable; the box could have been smaller. But apon opening the box, the neck was already detached. It also came with batteries included (two AA), but the guitar won’t accept your rechargeable battery pack from your wireless 360 controller, so you have to use conventional batteries.

okay time to get more achievements!

PS: I pre-ordered Rock Band when I picked up GH3. Woot!

In the market for an LCD monitor

Filed under: Uncategorized — hugsalot @ 1:22 pm

I need a new monitor for my PC. I still have an old CRT as my primary monitor (and a smaller 13″ 2nd one as my 2nd screen). I still plan on keeping this old 19″ CRT as a 2nd monitor, and dumping this little 13″ VGA monitor. So I want a widescreen LCD, with a good refresh rate for playing video games, preferably something in the HD resolution (1080p) but anything close to that would be fine (1050p, 1200p, whatever) In the 20″ size range, and hopefully something under $400.

SL burn out

Filed under: Second Life Shit! — hugsalot @ 8:52 am

Eh, I haven’t really been in the mood to login to SL much anymore. Might be due to getting my Xbox 360 back, playing Orange Box on XBL as well as the Guitar Hero III demo I found off the bit torrent sites. But these burn-outs always occur in cycles, so it’s not like I’ll never login again.

Microsoft rules!

Filed under: Gaming! — hugsalot @ 9:40 am

Okay so I get my replacement Xbox 360 hoping I’d get some extra goodies for having to deal with THREE failed units in the past 15 months, since I bought my first 360 back in July 2006.

They did give me a 1 month prepaid card for XBL gold membership, which everyone gets now whom are returning their dead 360s. So it’s nothing special, but I really wanted more than just that since I lost a good time not being able to play on XBL.

It took me about two weeks to get my 360 replaced each time mine failed. I’ve had mine fail on me three times so that totals at least six weeks of wasted XBL gold membership (3 failures x 2 weeks = 6 weeks)

So after I got my FOURTH 360 up and running, I quickly plugged in my USB keyboard and entered in the key-code for the pre-paid 1 month XBL Gold membership that came with my replacement 360 unit. This simply tacks on to the end of my existing membership which I had just renewed this past summer.

Later that night I checked my e-mail, and I first saw a confirmation e-mail that I’ve successfully used that prepaid card. But right below it was yet another confirmation saying that I’ve successfully renewed for 12 months subscription!!

Holey shit!

My first that was, Damnit they probably automatically billed me $50 for that 12 months renewal. Last summer they uncermimoniously automatically billed me $50 for another 12 months for XBL gold membership, with out any warning, nor any opportunity to say “no” to it. Even though I was going to buy another 12 months anyway, it just annoys me that they would do this automatically with out at LEAST getting prompted about after my subscription runs out.

But I realized that XBL doesn’t have my current billing info. Last month I saw some fraudulent activity on my card (over $80, which I got all of it back), and after I told my bank they immediately canceled my old card, and issued me a new one a week later. So XBL can’t possibly bill me for a 12 month renewal, otherwise it would be rejected!

This means I got 13 months free XBL gold membership that will last till the end of summer in 2009! WOOT! Thank GOD for my Service Contract with Microsoft, the extension for my XBL membership costs about the same as the two year service contract, and that service contract doesn’t end till 2009 too!

Also it’s a good idea you go and shop for 12 months gold XBL subscription cards since retail often sells them much CHEAPER than the normal $49.99 price you pay directly online from your Xbox. Often as low as $30 or so, usually offered with bundles. Also all of those pre-paid cards “stack” on top of each other, including those 48 hour XBL gold memberships you might get with some games you buy. You should use them all!

Next on my agenda, is the full version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of ROCK! Only10 days away!

Guitar Hero III demo is here!

Filed under: Gaming!, Uncategorized — hugsalot @ 11:43 pm

If you use bit torrent, goto this page download the torrent file, and start downloading it! This demo is NOT available on XBL as a downloadable demo. The only other way to get this is to buy the new Tony Hawk game.

Once you download this file, little over 400megs, open the RAR file and you’ll see a simple ISO file. Burn the ISO image to a CD or DVD pop it into your 360.

The GH3 demo will not start up right away like most games do. It will appear under “Demos and More” on the “games” blade, as if it was a demo you downloaded from XBL.

The demo comes with the tutorial which includes a tutorial on how the new battle mode works. It also comes with battle mode you can play with another local player, there is no online XBL play in the demo.

There are five songs which have all difficulties levels.

Hit me with your best shot
Pat Benatar

Lay Down
Priestess

Even Flow
Pearl Jam

Rock You like a Hurricane
Scorpions

The Metal
Tenacious D

Rock you like a hurricane I played on hard, and I had a fucking blast with that one with a whole HoPo/star power sequence early in the song. Also the demo closes once you’ve played four songs, and you gotta restart the demo to play again. Sucks considering you can’t buy the fucking game yet!

Rock out with your cock out!

New 360 yay!

Filed under: Gaming! — hugsalot @ 9:31 am

I expected the worse when getting my 360 back. I had assumed they will fix my unit rather than swap it, but that was wrong. Wednesday morning I got a phone call from UPS saying that they will deliver a package from Microsoft between 8am and 6pm, and someone must be present to accept the package and sign for it.

Woot!

So I’ll be getting my 360 back before the release of Guitar Hero 3. \m/

The quick turn around must be because they are swapping my old 360 for another unit already refurbished. I was also recently told that you can help expedite things if you include you reference number on the mailer box on your 360.

I’m also hoping they send me a “premium” unit (which I had the first two times), rather than the “core” unit they gave me last time around.  The difference is the premium unit has chrome on the eject button, and the disc tray face.  Yes it’s totally cosmetic.  But I’m really hoping they give me a unit that’s PROPERLY fixed on the inside with the new heatsink assembly so this dosen’t happen a FOURTH time.

I also asked if they could give me something in return after having three units die on me.  Like a free game, some MS points, something.  Would be really awesome if they ended up giving me an elite system!  I even bought a black 360 wireless controller that comes with the play and charge kit, for only $45!  Which is cheaper than just a normal wireless controller, with regular batteries. woot

I better get to bed at a normal hour (2:30am now) in case the UPS guy shows up in the morning.  So by the time most people read this I’ll be playing GH2, Halo 3,  and Orange Box!

3rd 360 bit the dust

Filed under: Gaming! — hugsalot @ 4:10 am

For the third time (yes 3rd) my Xbox 360 has died, with the infamous three red flashing red lights of DEATH. However this time my 360 will start up, but often crashes at some point after that. It’s not reliable enough to play anything. It will crash on the dashboard if I let it sit there for a while, and do nothing. Other times I turn on the 360, and see the red lights flash appear right away. <sigh>

I had kept my 360 in a vertical position thinking that it wouldn’t die on me as my other 360s did. It has been working just FINE for month with no hint of any pending problems like my older ones did. The last two 360 I had I kept horizontal, and they died on me much sooner than this one did, and would lock up on some games somewhat frequently. So I guess it doesn’t really matter, these older units just die with in 6 months. And I’ve gone though THREE of them in less than 18 months since I had my original 360.

Funny thing is this unit I have now IS a refurbished 360 from the last time I had my Xbox 360 die. It was probably repaired back before they really knew what was causing the problem. So I’m confident that they will now properly fix my unit with the knowledge they have now, so it won’t fail again. NO I’m not going to do the stupid Towel Trick since it doesn’t fix the defect.

Microsoft used to just swap you with a different 360 when you returned your dead unit. Now they are repairing each unit and will return back the one you sent them. This means it will take longer than it used to when my other two 360s died on me. Back then it took 2 weeks to get my unit back, but now since they are going to wait to repair this one, it will take four weeks to get it back!

Guitar Hero 3 will be out in about 4 weeks from now, so I’ll probably go buy the game before I get my 360 back from Microsoft, what fucking timing!!

It seems the longer I keep my 360 off, the longer it will keep working when I turn it on.. but usually when I fire up Halo 3 it will freeze when I resume a saved game.

Since I can get my 360 to works some times.. I fired up GH2, and it lets me play one song, or a few but it will take a shit on me eventually.
