CopyBot Part II

Now there are claims that a new version of this copybot can copy everything. Some how it can grab full textures, scripts, and other content inside prims. Yeah right. It sounds like everyone else is feeding into this rumor frenzy which is just upsetting more users. It’s very possible that the copybot doesn’t exist, and all this media hype, gossip, forum chatter, and (ahem) blog postings is what’s really making developers panic and close shop. Now I do believe the copybot exists, but I don’t believe it can do everything people are rumoring it to do. Stop adding to the hype!

Not that it isn’t impossible for the copybot to “copy everyting” but it’s not being done using the SL script language; not all by it self and it sounds like you have to babysit the entire process. The only real way this thing could work would have to be an application running on a local PC while logged into SL. No script can possibly be able to read in all this information, since there is no way to call for this data from within the SL viewer.

However all information must be preset somewhere on your computer for everything to be displayed in the viewer in the first place. So either they have a background application that’s hooking into the SL viewer looking at everything in memory, and/or they are packet sniffing data from SL and extrapolating information from that to create copies. But this seems like a cumbersome way of doing this.

The point is the copybot is not as simple as getting a script running it and having it copy stuff while you sip your coffee. The only scripting that’s involved is REZing the new object that later must be altered to mimic the object being copied.

Also consider the fact that since the anti-copybot scripts that are flooding everywhere can only affect the copybot script that REZES the copy. Whatever is grabbing the data and object assets can’t be stopped by some lame scripts yelling out !quit every 10 seconds. Once the data is collected it can be kept somewhere, and the copycat user can just login elsewhere and build a copy of whatever they want using their collected data.

Lets assume that the copybot is able to copy textures, sounds, and animations. Scripts and notecards are easily copied with out having to pay for it, but all other assets must be uploaded to the grid and pay the 10$L fee so that this material can be used. In a small way Linden Labs is benefiting from this.

Another thing is the bot will not organize these assets for you. This means a lot of manual editing of everything you’ll get from a copybot. This is far too cumbersome and too much work involved for any object that’s remotely complicated in its design. Plus even if you give the benefit of the doubt on what the copybot can do, it’s still going to cost you money and a lot of manual editing to make a copy of something, and have it functional.

The copybot fiasco is still overblown. Everyone get back to your normal second lives.

I never even HEARD of a copybot until AFTER people started using these annoying spamming anti-copybot scripts that are supposed to stop these copybots. Why the fuck should everyone have to suffer from these spamming fucking script that say “!quit” constantly? And they also say “please click me so you don’t get spammed” (something to that effect) yet you have no fucking clue where it is.

So I started to check out the SL forums about the copybot, and simply did a keyword search for it. There were two main threads that made a lot of sense about this and I also belive this is blown all out of proportion.

A copybot is capible of copying any rezed object. All it does is look at each prim and copies the parameter data of each prim (size, shape, twist, angle, bla bla bla) from what you see from the EDIT box.

It’s not copying the prim, it’s building a NEW prim and forming it using the same parameter edit box data. It CAN NOT copy contents inside said prim, nor can it copy the texture of it properly. It gets the texture KEYS from the existing prims, but not the acctual object texture that can be placed in one’s inventory. You can do this your self just copying the numbers into a prim you’ve made. This copybot script just does it faster.

Also nealy all objects are composed of hundreds of prims. So whoever is making a copy of an object has to put all the prims together them selves. Copybot comes with NO instructions, requires two simulataneous logins to operate, doesn’t work on no-build land, or land which doesn’t have enough available prims for the build to be made. Seems rather useless tool to me.

Of course everyone has to take this to extreme end.. even to the point where there has been online meida coverange that even further blows this out of proportion calimg that the SL economy will fall appart because of the copybot. It’s nice to know that the media still is totally fucking clueless about how things work (epspeically techinology) yet everyone takes thier word as gospel, since most people are morons anyway and don’t know any better.

Stores are closing because they belive they are being robbed, and everyone else is deploying these fucking annoying anti-copybots in thier parcles to stop anyone from copying thier stuff. Even people who DON’T RUN STORES, which I find to be an EXTREMELY paranoid act from users won’ doin’t even MAKE nor sell the stuff they have on thier parcles. Not like they are going to lose money like developers are.

Plus it’s not like this hasn’t happend before. Copybot just makes it quicker. Plus there have been organizations with in SL who’s purpose was to “copy” things that exist in game. Quoting from Talarus Luan forum post:

Extremely well said, and proves that this is indeed blown out of proportion. I do understand how wrong the copybot is. I’m not here to defend the copybot, but PLEASE everyone is going overboard about this. Everyone has gone ape shit over this. Thowing techie words like “DRM” into the mix which has nothing to do with second life. Some people like to sound smart when they toss in bullshit like DRM, DMCA and the like. These people need to be smacked. The value of the L$ went DOWN a huge amount since about Tuessay because of the retarded mass panic that went on from this.

More SL pet peeves

Users who take FOREVER to say anything, and you can see them “typing” and you can hear the “typing” sound repeat over and over, but takes over a minute for them to say a handful of words.

I HATE this lame “matchstick” of a cock that noobs have all the time. It looks like a Q-tip, or a matchstick.. depending on how users color it. It looks STUPID. get rid of them.. you can get better looking cocks elsewhere! I even hand out freebie cocks that do look halfway decent, but they aren’t scripted.
